Since 1831, Dublin Zoo has cared for animals large and small, native and exotic. During that time nearly 60 million people have visited the Zoo and have experienced wildlife in ways that reflected Irish society at the time. This book brings the long history of the Zoo to life, from its modest beginnings on a four-acre plot to today's Zoo of 70 acres where social groups of animals live in world-class habitats. Nearly two centuries of history are richly illustrated with previously unseen photographs, as well as tales from visitors and keepers.  There is a special emphasis on the extraordinary developments since 1994, which have secured Dublin Zoo’s position as a leader in wildlife conservation and education.

‘Dublin Zoo: an illustrated history’ was originally published in 2009.  A second edition was published in 2019 with new photographs and new stories as well as up-to-date developments. This revised edition brings the history up to 2021 and includes the Zoo’s response to the lengthy Covid pandemic and the appointment of a new director.

Author Catherine de Courcy is an international expert on the history of zoos.
