Elephant Personality: A Jumbo Role In Animal Welfare and Species Conservation

Personality is the essence of individuality in animals. It affects individual behaviours, perceptions and lived experiences. Being able to reliably assess personality in animals holds the key to understanding individual differences. Application of this knowledge is a key consideration for the provision of individual-level animal management. Lucy Rutherford (Behaviour & Welfare Scientist, Dublin Zoo) and Ellen Williams (Lecturer, Harper Adams University, UK) will discuss methods of assessing personality in elephants using data collected across a 10-year period (2012-2023) as a case study.

Date: Monday, April 7th 2025 at 6:30pm (duration: one hour)

Speaker: Dr Ellen Williams, a zoo animal behaviour and welfare scientist and Senior Lecturer in Animal Behaviour and Welfare from Harper Adams University, Lucy Rutherford (Behaviour & Welfare Scientist, Dublin Zoo)
